Youths band together to raise funds for Japan

All proceeds from this event will be channelled to the Singapore Red Cross Society for her Japan Disaster 2011 fund.

The “You Are Not Alone” (Anatawa Hitorijanai) concert, which will be held from 5pm to 10pm on 16 April at Far East Plaza Level 2 Atrium, is an initiative started mainly by the youth performers from the Singapore Street Festival.

It is supported by other youths and organisations such as Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (MCYS), National Youth Council (NYC), National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), YMCA Singapore, Universities Alumni and Singapore Management University (SMU). Sponsors include Far East Plaza, Samuel Seow Law Corporation and Beam Artistes.

“NVPC is delighted to support this initiative of the youths, as it comes from their hearts. They own the future, and have the power to change it. We applaud these youths who saw the need, had the courage and passion to step forward and are now influencing others to make a difference. NVPC’s giving survey has shown the rise in youth volunteerism and we hope that through more youth initiatives like this, others will be rallied to be not only a volunteer but also an influencer”, said Mr Laurence Lien, CEO, National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre.

Platform to touch the lives of others

The plight of the survivors of the tsunami in Japan has touched the hearts of many, including the youths. Unwilling to standby and merely watch their counterparts in Japan suffer, these socially conscious youths have voiced their willingness to do their part to help touch the lives of the survivors of the Japan tsunami and earthquake, by fronting youth performances at the “You Are Not Alone” concert.

The concert serves as a platform for youths to showcase their talents while giving them the opportunity to touch the lives of survivors in Japan. Besides this, the concert also enhances connectivity between the youths of Singapore and the youths and people of Japan.

Motivation to do their part

The concert is open to everyone. It targets to raise at least S$100,000. The number of concert attendees is expected to be based on the mall traffic. Street magicians, puppeteers and other free roaming performers will direct shoppers and members of the public to the concert. All concert expenses including third party costs have been either sponsored or donated in-kind by various partners and supporters who have extended their helping hand in making this concert possible.

Singapore Red Cross Society donation tins will be strategically positioned and manned. All collections and donations will be handed over to Singapore Red Cross Society’s Japan Disaster 2011 fund at the end of the event.

Apart from the support of organisations and corporations, the concert has also garnered the support of local artistes. In support of the passion and initiative of youths, many local artistes, including Jacintha Abisheganaden, Robert Fernando, Rahimah Rahim and Singapore Lyric Opera will also be performing at the concert.

“We are deeply inspired by the incredible spirit of giving among the Japanese despite their loss resulting from this tragedy. We hope to influence other youths in Singapore with the same desire and passion to give, by first playing our part to extend a helping hand through this fundraising event. No gift is too small, and every gift counts”, said Miss Athena Tan, one of the youth organising committee members.

Singapore Red Cross Society is also supportive of this initiative. “This is a platform for youths to step forward by empowering them with the opportunity to explore their potential and touch the lives of the survivors in Japan,” said Mr Lim Theam Poh, Director of Operations and Head of International Services, Singapore Red Cross.
