Pulau Ubin: An Island Gem
Named for its undulating granite hills, Pulau Ubin was a site for granite mining in the old days, but is now a lush “kampong” (village) island just off the mainland of Singapore.

Popular activities on the island include visiting the Chek Jawa nature reserve, cycling through the rustic roads, camping on the beach and enjoying the abundance of flora and fauna.
You can cycle around the rural retreat. (You will find bicycle rental shops to the left, as you step off the jetty). Full-day rental is affordable -- about S$10 for a whole day. But do remember to check the condition of your bicycle before you ride off! As eating places are scarce, packing a picnic lunch would be a good idea.
Mountain biking enthusiasts will be happy to know that Pulau Ubin houses one of Singapore’s best bike trails – Ketam Mountain Bike Park. If you’re looking to kick back and just appreciate nature, explore the overgrown rubber plantations and abandoned quarries. Watch out for falling durians and be sure to stock up on the mosquito repellant!
Pulau Ubin is publicly accessible via bumboats from Changi jetty, which costs $2.50 for a 10-minute one-way trip. Do take note that the bumboat will only depart when there are 12 passengers or if the whole boat is chartered for S$30. Also, it only operates from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. Admission to the island is free.
