Free tours to celebrate International Tourist Guide Day

The Society of Tourist Guides (STG) Singapore will be offering free tours this Saturday, 12 March 2011, with support from The Fullerton Heritage and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

ITGD is celebrated annually worldwide, to commemorate the contributions of professional tourist guides.

Participants this year can look forward to an enriching discovery of The Fullerton Heritage precinct. Participants can choose from three different tours: two walking tours -“From Fort to Fullerton” and “Gateway of Hope”, and a third tour which offers a coach-cum-walking tour - “Making Dreams Come True”.

Qualified tourist guides will entertain visitors with fun anecdotes and historical nuggets about the former General Post Office, Clifford Pier, better known as “Ang Teng” or the Red Lantern Pier.

The focus of these tours will be the Marina Bay and new iconic landmarks. In Singapore, the STG encourages its members to continually create memorable and interesting interpretations of life in Singapore with new and creative tour routings.

The Society also looks towards improving and enhancing the skills of tourist guides, through continuous skills training and education, to better meet the demands of
today’s traveller.

Ms Jean Wang, Chairman of the STG said, “In preparation for the coming ITGD, guides had to undergo a seven-hour hands-on training course, which included a tour
of Singapore Philatelic Museum to give them a better understanding of the historical development of the site. We hope that the free tours conducted on ITGD would not only allow participants to better appreciate Singapore’s heritage through our guides’ historical narrative of the past, but also help increase awareness of the tourist guide as a profession.”

The Society also works closely with the STB and other industry partners to promote the professionalism of tourist guides as tourism ambassadors of Singapore.

Members of the public and tourists, who are interested in participating in the ITGD this Saturday, 12 March, 2011, can contact the STG via their hotline at 6338 8659, e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
