More than 240 students at the Broadrick Secondary School were inspired today by the personal dedication of Ms. Lina Chong and Ms. Melissa Kwee, two Singapore Youth Award (SYA) recipients under the Community and Youth Services category.
Organised by the National Youth Council (NYC), the inspirational talk highlighted the importance of youth involvement in community projects, encouraged the students to strive for ‘Excellence with a Heart’ and taught them the importance of being active, caring and connected youths in Singapore.
Held a day ahead of International Women’s Day, a global day that celebrates women’s social achievements, the talk at Broadrick Secondary School is a first in a series of SYA 2011 Talks which are aimed at inspiring, cultivating, engaging and encouraging youths to make a difference in society as well as in their everyday lives.
Mr Edward Alec D’Silva, Chairman of the SYA Panel commended the two ladies on their dedication to the community, “The SYA has helped to recognise outstanding individuals who are committed to serving the community over the years. Lina and Melissa exemplify the spirit of the Singapore Youth Award and we hope that they can inspire the younger generation to be more involved and spread the spirit of giving and serving the community. This is in line with our commitment in building social capital and creating a culture based on care and empathy.”
The SYA aims to recognise, commend and encourage contributions made by youths who have excelled in their respective fields as well as contributed back to the community. It honours young people whose achievements will serve as an inspiration to others.
