The fight against drugs goes online

To engage youths online and drive home the anti-drug message, the National Council against Drug Abuse (NCADA) and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) will launch the first Anti-Drug Online Gaming Challenge on Facebook.

Taking advantage of the popular social media, the online challenge will run on Facebook from 5 December 2011 to 26 February 2012 and will be open to youths aged 13 to 25.

Participants will learn about the dangers of drug abuse through playing online games.

By youths for youths

The three online games featured in this gaming challenge, ‘The Right Choice’, ‘Escape from Drugs Land’ and ‘Jump Jump Rescue’, were designed by students of the top spots in the Flash Games Competition organised by NCADA and CNB last October.

As the games were created with the theme “Life Does Not Rewind” in mind, all three games do not have the undo function nor allow players to go back to their previous step, which echoes the message that players should make the right choices during game play and in life.

The right choice

Gillian Tan, 19, from Singapore Polytechnic, who topped the Flash Games Competition with her game ‘The Right Choice’, said, “I think our game spreads the message in a simple yet interactive way. I believe youths like us can absorb the messages better through playing games and I hope players can learn to make ‘the right choice’ in life through our game.”

Added Eric Eng, also 19, from ITE College West: “Our game has an element that appeals to the competitive nature of youths. We wanted to create a simple game that will educate yet entertain at the same time, and I think that our game is addictive enough for players to keep playing.” Eng is one of the creators of ‘Jump Jump Rescue’, which came in third in the Flash Games Competition.

One game will be launched each month from December 2011 to February 2012 on the Life Does Not Rewind Facebook fan page.
