Singapore Discovered! - Know your host Paul

The affable Paul Froggatt is a British who works as a chef at a French restaurant in Singapore. He based his decision to come to live and work in the city state four years ago literally on the flip of a coin.

Q: Why did you make the decision to work in Singapore and what drew you in and made you choose Singapore above all other countries?

Paul: I made the decision on a flip of a coin. It was between coming here to see and learn about a new county or going back to the United Kingdom. I’m very happy that the coin landed the Singapore way up.

Q: What were some of your best initial encounters when you arrived in Singapore?

Paul: The best initial encounter was the heat. As soon as I got off the plane, it hit me WOW. I felt so freaking hot and then I learned Singapore was all about the heat! Even down to my first meal, it was all about the chili and spices and that knocked for six. And all of that on my first day here. What a day that was and I will never forget it.

Q: What do you love best about Singapore?

Paul: The mixes of different cultures. I’ve been here for four years and still I learn something new about different cultures. It just amazes me. And I love the hot rain because in the UK, we have very cold rain and it’s not nice to be out and about. But here the rain is hot so it very nice to walk around and get wet.

Q: Tell us a little bit about Singapore Discovered! - and your decision to be part of the show.

Paul: I thought it would be good to learn and see more about the place I am living in. And I did it because working as a chef, we don’t get a lot of time out, and it’s the best thing I could have done to find out more about Singapore. I always like trying something new.

Q: In filming the show, what did you discover about Singapore that you never knew existed?

Paul: I never knew that there was sword fighting here and run by a Singaporean that has really learned the art of the sword.

Q: What are some of your hobbies - and where do you pursue these in your free time? What are some of your favourite hangouts in Singapore?

Paul: I live, eat and breathe cooking so a lot of my free time is cooking or eating. I love chilling out at my house because I am lucky to have an old black and white with lots of greenery around it. I find it very soothing from the high speed of the kitchen and the main city. I like going out for breakfast with my family. I’m always on the lookout for new places to eat and just taking things nice and slow.
