Green Kampong

SingaporeKopitiam (SK): How did the name ‘GreenKampong’ come about?

Nadya Hutagalung (NH): GreenKampong was thought up by my brainy and sometimes creative husband and co-founder Desmond Koh.

SK: Why did you decide to go green?

Benjamin ‘Mr Miyagi’ Lee (BMML): Our planet is in peril. There really isn't a choice.

NH: It’s been a long and progressive progress with trip-ups along the way which started as far back as my MTV days but it was always just a message I wanted to share and thought others should know about.  I started really implementing it in my life more intentionally about six years ago. First with my jewellery line OSEL being sustainable, then came the building of our eco home and GreenKampong followed after that.

And why? Because I am the daughter of an inspirational woman and the mother to three kids who will inherit this mess we are leaving them and I can’t help but feel incredible guilt.

SK: What are GreenKampong’s key objectives?

BMML: It's a two-pronged approach - to spread the green message, and to be a repository of green information from both consumers and manufacturers.

SK: So what has been the highlight of ‘Green Kampong’ so far?

NH: Just being able to keep it alive and slowly garnering more interest is a highlight. It’s sometimes tough getting enough content or manpower to keep it alive and kicking but we are getting there. The house has been taking up most of my time over the last 6-8 moths so the site suffered a little.

SK: What’re your personal tips on going green?

NH: Educate yourself. Know the truth. Make a change.

BMML: Use less water by turning off the tap when you're brushing your teeth and washing the dishes. Never leave the tap running.

SK: Will you be holding any major events during this year or the next?

NH: We have some developments up our sleeves and will share once we can! :)

SK: How and why was this team selected? And could you briefly describe the roles of the nine members of the GK team?

BMML: Apart from specific roles like 'editor', most of the editorial team's brief is loosely based on the 'specialities' of each contributor. For example, Linda Tom garners information and writes about food.

SK: How many ‘hats’ are you wearing currently?

BMML: Too many. I have a very big head. I'm a writer that specialises in com* edy, and a online content consultant for ad companies.

NH: My head is not as big as Ben’s, but I think I can be hatstand.
