The Singapore comedy boom

Do Singaporeans have a sense of humour?

The country, despite its success economically, is often criticised for being sterile and somewhat humourless. But that image is changing ... fast.

Singapore is undergoing a laughter renaissance. The city, now famed for its unique Formula 1 night race, is also in the throws of a comedy boom.

For many years, The Comedy Club Asia has brought the best international comedic talent to Singapore, to entertain locals and expats.

But now something new is happening in the form of the Open Mic scene, created by Comedy Club Asia founder, Jonathan Atherton.

In February this year, three of our Open Micers supported Hollywood celebrity and comedian Rob Schneider on the Singapore leg of his come-back tour. Influential Straits Times writer John Lui hailed the three local acts as being funnier than Rob in a review of the show!

And in October last year, the all-Asian comedy cast of the inaugural Kings and Queen of Comedy Asia was completely sold out, with over 90% of the audience Asian or Singaporean.

This year's sequel Kings and Queen of Comedy Asia, will be taking place on 28 and 29 October. Featuring five of the hottest global Asian acts:

  1. Kumar (SIN)
  2. Harith Iskander (MAL)
  3. Papa Cj (IND)
  4. Paul Ogata (JAP/USA)
  5. Ronny Cheing (AUS)

So to answer the original question: Do Singaporeans have a sense of humour?

The answer is not only a resounding 'yes', it is getting stronger day by day.
