Gemuk Girls

A story about an unlikely mother-daughter pair during the 1960s, Gemuk Girls is back for another run from 9 till 20 November 2011 at The Necessary Stage Black Box.

This critically acclaimed play by The Necessary Stage (TNS) will once again focus on the lives of the dynamic Gemuk Girls and their long-lost relative.

Directed by Alvin Tan and written by playwright Haresh Sharma, Gemuk Girls revolves around Kartini, the mother, who is loud and overbearing while her daughter, Juliana, is straitlaced and on the verge of entering politics.

Despite their differences, they are proud to be the Gemuk Girls. However, the peace of their lives is thrown into turmoil when they receive shocking news about Kartiniʼs father, who had been arrested and detained during the 1960s. Can they survive as they struggle to reconcile the past with the present?

First shown in October 2008 to a sold out crowd, Gemuk Girls swept three awards at the 9th Life! Theatre Awards, namely Best Script, Best Actor and Production of the Year.

The original cast members will return for this run to reprise their roles. Aidli ʻAlinʼ Mosbit will once again step into the shoes of Kartini, the free-spirited mother whose attitude is at odds with that of her daughter. Alin is also the founder and director of Panggung (ARTS).

Playing the role of Juliana, Kartiniʼs overachieving daughter, is Siti Khalijah Zainal. Siti recently won the Best Actress LIFE! Theatre Award for her role in TNSʼs Model Citizens and her original portrayal of Juliana had earned her a nomination in the same category after the first run of Gemuk Girls.

Najib Soiman returns to play Marzuki, Kartiniʼs long-lost father whose reappearance creates turmoil in the lives of the Gemuk Girls. Najib was awarded Best Actor at the 9th Life! Theatre Awards for his portrayal of Marzuki in the first run of the play.

As with all of TNSʼs productions, Gemuk Girls promises to push boundaries and examine the issues that our society faces.
