Baybeats 2010 Band Spotlight: Brandals

The Brandals were eye-catching and a dynamic finger in the eye of the rather subdued Baybeats 2010 crowd.

Hailing from urban Jakarta, The Brandals infused their punk rock n roll sound with what was described as urban decay and with copious amounts of irreverent humour.

With energetic, flambouyant and charismatic Eka, 34, as their frontman, The Brandals took the Powerhouse in a vice-like grip and bit into its jugular.

Eka, who was dressed in a vampire cape, loudly and humourously proclaimed: “We are from Jakarta, the land of bombs and extremism, and we, are the product!”, and in-your-face sexuality. It was indeed a musical breath of fresh air.

300x200-BrandalsUrban rock n roll filled the air and Eka gyrated wildly to the songs from their album Brandalisme. The album that features the riotous disorder, paranoia, melancholy, schizophrenic, of every emotional aspect of the band, gave the crowd and the fans an almost intimate insight to the band.

Eka, with a degree in Fine Art from the University of New South Wales in Sydney and who was also a graphic designer for Ogilvy & Mathers advertising agency, added a touch of intellectualism to the band.

Describing their second trip to Singapore as amazing, Eka elaborated, “Actually, while it is amazing, every gig is a battleground for us.” A battle which they have won convincingly as they got the crowd singing and dancing with them in their set. It is by no means an easy feat, Eka noted, as, “Singaporean crowds tend to be a lot quieter than the ones we’re used to in Indonesia.”

With three studio albums under their belt, they are keen to expand on their visions of a sprawling urban ghetto with their fourth studio album aptly titled DGNR8, which is slated for a January 2011 release. Of the album, Eka noted that the music will contain elements of urban Jakarta. “See you at the apocalypse!” was Eka’s parting shot, with visions of dystopia and urban dirt and grime. Ladies and gentlemen, here are The Brandals.
