Baybeats Day 2 - Something old, something new
Buoyed by the great weather, Singapore Kopitiam writer Loretta Perera reviews the second day of Baybeats 2010 at the Esplanade.

After the first day of huge crowds, rocking bands and indie eruptions, this annual, free alternative event continued to send waves and beats through the bay.
The word, by this time, had spread out of the alternative circle and extended to families, expats, prep kids and senior citizens creating a crowd of all sorts with music that catered to all.
Santamonica began the evening with a journey into Wonderland -- the Indonesian band’s influences stems from a collective love for Alice and her mystical adventure. What’s great about the Baybeats concept is how the afternoon starts out in the Observation Deck in the library and the Chillout Stage within the Esplanade; once things start to get all-out insatiable, the party continues along the bay with the Powerhouse and Arena stages.
Local band Lunarin, interestingly enough, has two lawyers in their lineup -- not that you’d think they were anything other than musicians when you see them onstage. The trio has been jamming together for 15 years and it shows -- whether or not their music is your preference, the tight sound is indisputable. Lunarin also has an album that was released on Friday, the day before their gig, and entertained the crowd with songs both old and brand new.
For those with a louder taste, Meltgsnow drew huge crowds of head-banging, leather-clad metalheads; it would seem the Metal culture in Singapore is far greater than is apparent. Shockingly disturbing to some, a sweet symphony to many
Basement in My Loft, who was also promoting their new album See the Rhyme in the Dirt and Grime, lived up to the intriguing if somewhat novel experience they were aiming for at their appearance at Baybeats. “We'll be aiming to leave people with the thought ''what was that all about?'', nothing bland and safe,” BIML successfully predicted the outcome of Saturday night.
Back in the Concourse’s Chillout Stage, Elektone spun some sick tunes with synthesizers, ambient sound and Kraftwerk-like vocal manipulation to a somewhat subdued crowd that needed some warming up. As several bands over the past two days had previously discovered, this came inadvertently rather than intentionally.
As with the first day, fireworks interrupted the show at a badly-timed middle-of-set moment.
Besides that mishap -- Baybeats Day 2 was a nice peak before heading into the last day, which will see more local bands, acclaimed international acts and, hopefully no fireworks .
The kids, they just came to rock!
